Devon Cattle are made up of a number of breeds which we have listed below.
Devon Red
The Red Ruby Devon is recognised internationally for its ability to produce the very finest beef on a low input system. Its enduring qualities ensures the Red Ruby Devon has a future as strong as its heritage is rich and can justly lay claim to being “part of farming’s future”.
South Devon
The South Devon is likely to be the largest of the British native breeds seen on Dartmoor and are often known as the 'Gentle Giants'. The South Devon tends to be a rich, medium red with copper tints and has thick, loose, mellow skin.
Welsh Black Crosses
One of the most common breeds of Dartmoor Cattle to be seen on Dartmoor today is the Welsh Black crosses. These are known for their hardiness and ability to graze the rougher pastures, so much so that rough, reedy pasture is was often called 'black bullock land'.
Belted Galloway
The other common moorland breed is the Belted Galloway, again these cattle are well suited to the harsh environment of Dartmoor. They are very distinctive beasts with their white 'belt' wrapped around the middles. The Belted Galloway can be very lively.
