About Dartmoor National Park

Dartmoor was designated a National Park by statute in 1951. It is 368 square miles (954 sq km) in area, has about 33,400 people living in it, and millions of people visit it each year.

The granite upland dates from the Carboniferous period of geological history. The moorland is capped with many exposed granite hilltops (known as tors), providing habitats for Dartmoor wildlife. The highest point is High Willhays, 621 m (2,037 ft) above sea level. The entire area is rich in antiquities and archaeology.

Climbing Dartmoor

Climbing Dartmoor offers unspoilt views and challenging granite tors.  Both individuals and groups take advantage of the many public areas on the moor where climbing can be enjoyed and wildlife and the views appreciated to the full.  It is important to check whether firing is scheduled within the Merrivale, Okehampton and Willsworthy training areas of the moor.  Firing programes are published in local newspapers and at Information Centres the week before.  BBC Radio Devon also broadcasts daily updates.

There is no pulbic access or climbing allowed on Vixen Tor.  General information, including health and safety, codes of conduct can be obtained from http://www.dartmoor-npa.gov.uk/climbing_booklet.pdf
