Dartmoor Search

Dartmoor Tors origins date back about 280 million years when the process resulting in the formation of the Dartmoor tors was started. The granite forming Dartmoor and particularly the Dartmoor Tors was created by the cooling and solidifying of molten rock at a temperature of 900 - 1000°C. The minerals which make up granite crystallised as closely interlocking grains forming the hard rock.

The total number of tors and hills on Dartmoor varies considerably depending on the source. For the purposes of this website we have included all Tors that are referred to as a 'Tor' on OS maps together with outcrops and hills which are generally considered as Tors due to their rock formations.

Dartmoor National Park
